UPDATED: A government official has contacted us and informed us that the story is not true, however the board has not yet been announced. The government official, however, made no comments regarding this story.
The Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo has recently appointed his wife, Michelina Refalo, to the recently set-up Food Safety and Security Authority. The composition of the board hasn’t even been announced yet and the fact that his wife has been appointed to the board may have got something to do with this.
Michelina Refalo has a long history of acquiring public contracts and appointments thanks to her husband – this is just her latest. She was also involved with her husband in the Destination Europe rental fraud, in which landlords leased their apartments to Chinese residents who never actually lived in the apartments. Destination Europe eventually collapsed. after the foreign authorities clamped down on its mother and affiliated companies, but the local Police never bothered to take action about the company.
Back to Minister Anton Refalo, who is mostly known for stealing a British era-marker stone from the middle of the road (and forced to return it), is very keen on installing his relatives in public posts. Recently, he successfully managed to get his daughter elected as Mayor of Xewkija all the while she is doing a full-time course at the University of Malta. Recently he also built a hotel on agricultural land and is also turning further agricultural land into a car park for his hotel.
The Refalo family remains a prominent fixture in the Labour Party, but mainly as clients of a rent-seeking system.
