The atmosphere around President Donald Trump and his associates following Charlie Kirk’s murder is one of retribution as the President directs his party and his government to address what he describes as “hate speech” and “paid agitators”. President Trump also instructed his Attorney General to look into these matters following a visit he made to a restaurant in Washington where he was booed by some patrons. President Trump felt that their behaviour was illegal.
The atmosphere is marked by President Trump’s statements following Charlie Kirk’s murder accusing the far-left of inciting Charlie Kirk’s murder. The suspected murderer however, has a right-wing background.
Meanwhile, some Republicans online are calling for employees who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death or spoke ill of him to be fired. Some pro-Republican commentators are also compiling lists of people who have posted negative remarks about Kirk.
During Joe Biden’s Presidency, Republicans posed as advocates for free speech saying that liberals were perpetuating “cancel culture”. In his first trip to Europe after being appointed Deputy-President, JD Vance accused European nations of restricting free speech. The discourse by Republicans is now changing with restraining hate speech increasingly becoming a priority for President Trump and the Republican Party.
