There has been significant controversy over a recent statement by Malta Sports Journalists Association (GĦĠS) president Antvin Monsigneur, who lambasted the PN’s bill to enshrine environmental protection in the Constitution. Monsigneur attended a Labour Party event on Sunday, where he called the bill “crazy” (ġennata pura) and said it would threaten the livelihoods of sports journalists
The Association’s President, who was recently elected by a mere three votes over his rival, has already been throwing his weight around. The Maltese Herald is informed that there have been changes to personnel in the Executive Committee with the treasurer ousted and replaced by a person in the confidence of the committee. An administrator who contested the post of General Secretary (and lost) has also been installed. All this has not been announced to members yet.
Although the GĦĠS did issue a statement where it stated that Monsigneur’s presence at the activity was in his own personal capacity, and not as President of the Association, a clip of the event indicates otherwise. The clip is reproduced below.
