According to the latest EuroStat figures, Malta has had the second-highest increase of tourists’ nights spent in the country among EU countries in 2024 compared with 2023 with an increase of 14.4%. The country with the highest increase in tourist nights was Cyprus with 14.5% increase. Finland had the largest decrease with 0.7% followed by France with 0.6%.
Overall, nights spent by tourists in EU countries increased by 2.7% in 2024.
Most of the tourists in the EU are actually from other EU countries with 61.6% of all tourists being from the EU. Up to 21.3% tourists come from non-EU European countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Belarus (Russia is not designated as a non-EU European country). 7.5% of all tourists are from the US, 4.9% from Asia and 2.3% from Latin America. Only 0.8% of tourists in the EU are from Africa with tourists from Oceania comprising of up to 1%.
Malta’s tourist numbers have kept increasing this year with tourist expenditure also increasing. Gozo is particularly also experiencing rising tourist numbers. Malta had up to 3.56 million tourists in 2024 which was a record-breaking figure.
