Opposition Leader Alex Borg gave his first speech at the Nationalist Party’s Executive Council, which saw a change in its Executive Council. In his speech, Alex Borg highlighted a number of his policy-priorities which include the increasing population, the environment and the exodus of the youth.
On the the issue about the increasing population, Alex Borg said that a labour-study is needed to asses which are those industries that are depending on foreign labour. He stressed that the Maltese labour market has many flaws which need to be addressed but fell short in describing these flaws. He also added that the Labour government has built an economic model based on the quantity of labour supply but did not invest in infrastructural requirements. He also added that the Nationalist Party wants an economic based on quality and not quantity.
The Opposition Leader said he hates seeing youths leaving the Islands and wants to make a difference by ensuring that all youths have enough opportunities to remain in Malta. He also paired this with the deterioration of the environment and condemned the Labour government for opposing PN’s proposed constitutional reforms to safeguard the environment and ecosystems. Alex Borg also said that there are up to 100 nations in the world which have these constitutional provisions in place (this is actually true, and the number is actually higher). In addition, the Opposition Leader said that the Prime Minister voted in favour of environmental provision at the United Nations General Assembly in 2022.
Alex Borg denied that the Nationalist Party wants to ban hunting or feasts and described these accusations as a sign of panic by Labour. He insisted that the Nationalist Party will continue working for the national agenda. The environment, he added, strengthens Malta’s traditions and does not restrict them.
On party matters he said that he doesn’t want to be partisan and called for the Nationalist Party to be the party of the nation. He also said that he wants to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Labour government to implement a mass transportation system. He also said he will be visiting the party’s sectional committees and pledged to empower them further not to consider themselves just as money collectors during marathons.
He also denied the Labour Party’s accusations that PN is attacking Malta at the European Parliament and said that PN has always defended Malta’s interests. He highlighted that in his last visit to Brussels, PN lobbied for more EU funds to Malta including in the fishing sector.
Alex Borg also took a defiant tone against the government and accused the Prime Minister of rejecting the national interest for partisan interests. He concluded by urging national unity to build a better Malta.
