PN should continue its momentum with progressive legislation by proposing reforming laws on animals and pets

Apart from backtracking on the environment, the Labour Party has also backtracked on animals’ rights as it went from banning circuses to legalising the keeping and trade of wild and exotic animals. Animal rights activists also cite the rising number of cases of animal cruelty and the number of dogs being abandoned in the streets.

The Nationalist Party should address this issue, which impacts animal welfare as well as the daily lives, security, and well-being of ordinary citizens. Consider the frequent cases of dogs left to roam for hours on rooftops: cruel to the animals and a serious nuisance to neighbours.

On the other hand, the Labour Party is going in the opposite direction. Its MPs are also throwing promises and pledges to Malta’s hunters and PN risks losing its unwitting alliance with environmental groups if it also takes this direction. If PN took up animal rights, it would stay consistent with its current policy direction and further strengthen its alliance with green groups. It can also address the ongoing crisis about Malta’s lack of a 24/HR veterinary service.
