Most of the mercenaries fronting the Labour Party today have no idea what the Labour Party stood for when it opposed the Nationalist administrations of Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. The Labour Party opposed the rationaliation plans introduced by ex-Minister George Pullicino and apart from participating in protests for the environment, the Labour Party even organsied protests of its own.
One particular protest that was organised by the Labour Party was a protests in Baฤงrija against the construction of Victor Scerri’s villa in Baฤงrija’s valley. The Labour Party mocked Victor Scerri with many insults over hos obscene construction development, only to climb into power and reverse all its previous pledges and stances while turning into the biggest cause of the evisceration of our natural environment.
One protest banner I remember that was made by Labour against Victor Scerri described him as “Il-Fidil tal-Baฤงrija”. Without an idiomatic context,ย the word “fidil” means “loyal servant”, but we usually use the term to infer to someone as a “naive idiot” or to someone feigning naivety. Today, Labour changed sides, and is attacking the very activists it stood with in protests and in the streets during its years of Opposition. On the other hand, speaking for my friends and I, most of us have changed the way we vote, but we haven’t changed our core principles.
