Momentum and residents concerned about pavement works in Marsascala: works separate from Ferry Terminal project according to Transport Malta sources

Marsascala residents were taken by surprise as works have started on coastal pavement of the quaint harbour town in its central areas. Residents and political party Momentum have raised their concerns that the project is meant to impose the ferry terminal on residents. The residents have also pointed out that there were no permits about the incoming works.

Marsascala residents have opposed the ferry terminal due to the fact that it will turn some parts of the bay unsuitable for swimming. Some residents have also said that the ferry terminal option would not be a green solution due to the emissions from the ferry itself. Residents are also concerned about the impacts of potential mass-tourism on the town. Marsascala is one of the only remaining towns in Malta that is mostly surrounded by either countryside or the coast.

The Maltese Herald has spoken to a source at Transport Malta, who informed us that Transport Ministry is currently repaving the promenade of the coast road and will give the promenade a facelift. The source has also informed us that the Ministry intends to go ahead with the project the ferry terminal project as part of its ongoing efforts to shift transport infrastructure away from cars. The source also informed us that the ferry will be a hybrid vehicle in an attempt to reduce potential emissions.

The feature photo shows the pavement works in the central parts of the town but not the area where the ferry terminal will be built.

It is a fact that the ferry terminal will make a part of the bay unusable to swimmers and the project adds to residents’ genuine concerns about the unbridled construction development in the town. A new gas-station has been built at the outskirts of Marsascala for the first time very recently.
