Budget Day overshadowed by protests and party rebellion

While Parliament convenes for the Finance Minister’s budget speech, demonstrators camping outside parliament will be protesting against the government’s proposed planning reforms, described by NGOs as the most corrupt planning reforms in history.

The protest movement against the government’s proposed planning reforms is significantly more numerous than protest movements in the recent past, with many residents in Malta being fed-up of the government’s continued encroachment of environment and the chaotic results of the government’s planning policies. The Labour Party has also faced a series of resignations this month in relation to its policy direction over planning and the environment.

The Labour Party is reacting with contempt and hostility towards protestors and critics, even describing them in party media as “Nationalists in panic.”
