Gozo Channel workers on strike

A number of Gozo Channel workers are currently on strike with large queues forming both to Mġarr and also to Ċirkewwa on an hourly basis as a result.

Sources who spoke to The Maltese Herald confirmed that mooring-men and other staff are on go-slow directives from their union. These staff are being paid substantially less than their counterparts.

The situation is causing great frustration amongst workers who need to commute daily and who are arriving late for work.

The staff who are affected include the mooring men and cleaners. These are apparently engaged by a sub contractor so their conditions are different.

Several commuters contacted us complaining of hour long delays between ferries with some even taking two hours to reach their destination. Toilets on vessels are also closed since they are not being cleaned.

The Government should step in and stamp this slave labour on the head! It’s not just on the ferry either, it’s all walks of life on both islands.
It’s disgraceful how these companies are exploiting human beings whilst lining their own pockets.

  5. As a visitor to Malta I booked on a tour which included a ferry crossing whilst the strike was happening. It resulted in a delay of no more than an hour.Im happy to be inconvenienced if it means staff get a fair pay for the service they provide.Good Luck to them
