Lights out in Kyiv as Russia bombs power plants: at least 11 killed

Yesterday night, Russia has bombed Ukraine’s power plants of the Centrenergo company in Kremenchuk, Dnipro and other cities, with ballistic missiles, causing a massive blackout today across many cities in Ukraine including in Kyiv. Ukraine has  retaliated by bombing Russian power plants in Belgorod. Russian drones and missile attacks attacks are expected again later on tonight.

Earlier this year, Ukraine began striking Russian power plants in retaliation for Moscow’s repeated attacks on Ukraine’s own energy infrastructure, aiming to deter further assaults on its grid. Russia has been bombing Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure since the beginning of its invasion in 2022 but it has escalated these attacks this year.

Ukraine downed up to 400 drones but President Volodymyr Zelensky said that it was difficult to counter ballistic and aeroballistic missiles and Ukraine is trying to purchase further anti-air defences from the US.
