Ukraine has retaliated against Russian attacks by firing drones and missiles at Russian power plants across its border after Russia hit critical power plants in Ukraine that resulted in wide power outages across the country. Power outages in Ukraine persisted yesterday with a blackout taking place in the middle of an interview with President Volodymyr Zelensky by the British press outlet, The Guardian.
Yesterday, Ukraine hit Russian power plants and substations in Korenevo, Voronezh, Belgorod, Taganrog, and in the occupied Crimea region. Russia has beenย striking at Ukrainian power plants and energy infrastructure since its invasion in 2022, but Ukraine begun retaliating in kind very recently. Blackouts in multiple cities were reported.
The European Union has supported Ukrainian’s energy and electricity infrastructure with up to โฌ2 billion in funds since Russia’s invasion. An additional โฌ400 million has also been announced in July this year to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a focus on hydro-electric power. Up to 68% of Ukraine’s pre-war electricity-generation capacity was destroyed by Russia since 2022 (up to 24 GW).
Russia has launched its daily drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian cities earlier this night targeting Starokostiantyniv and the Sumy region with most of the drones intercepted by air-defence.
