An Emirati-based newscaster from Sky News Arabia travelled to Al-Fashir, Sudan, where the Rapid Support Forces carried out ethnic cleansing, and was filmed getting chummy with RSF officer Shiraz Khalid, the same woman who had urged RSF militiamen to rape the women of Al-Fashir. The scenes of the newscaster getting chummy with the RSF officer has outraged the Sudanese community.
Sky News Arabia is a joint venture between the UK-based group, Sky News, and the Emirati-based, International Media Investments (IMI) corporation. The IMI isย controlled by Sheikhย Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan who has been the main financier and supplier of weapons to the RSF.
Sky News Arabia, which has been producing pro-RSF propaganda since the war in Sudan was reignited in December 2022, mostly serves as an Emirati-government mouthpiece competing against its bigger Qatari rival in the region, Al-Jazeera (Arabic). Sky News Arabia is producing content on Al-Fashir to give the impression that “life is back to normal” in the city.
More than a hundred thousand people remain unaccounted for in Al-Fashir after the RSF stormed the city. Tens of thousands fled to neighbouring Tawila and hundreds died on the way with thirst and exhaustion. The RSF killed at least three thousand civilians after they captured the city and there is extensive evidence of their war crimes. The International Criminal Court has opened an investigation.
