Microtek Medical Malta closes down: 96 employees sacked

Last year, Medline bought the surgical solutions unit of Ecolab Surgical Solutions for up to $950 million. This acquisition included the manufacturing unit in Malta, Microtek Medical Malta. Microtek Medical Malta is now closing down with up to 96 workers facing unemployment.

The government and the General Workers’ Union have formed a task force in order to find alternative employment for the sacked employees. The Minister for the Economy Silvio Schembri made this announcement yesterday.

This is the second major closure of a manufacturing company in Malta, as the new US tariffs prompt a major restructuring and rethink of operations for many manufacturing firms worldwide.
