The Kurdish forces ruling the north-eastern part of Syria have banned any celebrations marking the one-year anniversary of the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the liberation of Syria. Cities across Syria are holding their respective and separate celebrations on their first anniversary since they ere liberated from Bashar al-Assad’s forces last year.
One year ago, Syria was liberated by the armed group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham led by Ahmed al-Sharaa (Jolani), who launched Operation Deterrence Against Aggression after Hezbollah forces withdrew from Syria. The operation, that lasted two weeks, went on to topple the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Talks between the SDF and the Syrian government have failed over the integration of the SDF with the Syrian Army and the SDF remains insistent on decentralisation despite signing an integration agreement earlier this year. US Envoy to Turkey and Syria Tom Barrack said in Doha that he was skeptical about decentralisation being successful in Syria.
Armed conflict between the SDF and the Syrian government looks ever more likely. Turkey stopped bombing the SDF on the request of the Syrian government.
