Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Prime Minister Ian Borg was at the Doha Forum in Qatar and took part in a discussion on immgiration with former EU Commissioner on Migration and Security Dimitris Avramopoulos, Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos and President of the Mihalos Foundation Panagiotis (Peter) G. Mihalos. The discussion was moderator by Al-Jazeera newscaster Elsy Abi Assi.
During the discussion, the Foreign Minister said that Malta, like most countries in Europe and also the US, needs migrants to address gaps in every sector of its labour force, and the issue is mainly how to manage and regulate the migration process.
The Foreign Minister also met his Qatari counterpart Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. He also met the Qatari Minister of Energy Saad al-Kaabi. Foreign Minister Borg is discussing potential gas purchases from various sources in a bid to explore the possibility of cheaper gas prices while gas prices keep soaring.
Interviewed by Doha News, the Foreign Minister said that Malta is supporting Qatar in its peace mediation efforts for Palestine and is also supporting the Palestinian Authority to reform itself to obtain legitimacy both in Gaza and in the West Bank and operate as a state.
The Doha Forum hosted world and business leaders for discussions about ongoing conflicts, migration and emerging technology.
