“Greenland will not be part of the USA” – Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen

Speaking at a joint-press conference with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that Greenland will not be part of the US and that if Greenland had to choose, it would choose Denmark and the EU.

Both leaders stressed that Greenland’s future can only be decided by the Greenlandic people. They rejected any external pressure or interference, reaffirmed Greenland’s right to self-determination, and underlined the importance of respect for international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Both leaders said Denmark and Greenland remain united and committed to dialogue, stability, and cooperation within existing constitutional and international frameworks.

The press conference was in Danish and can be found here.

European leaders have united in their defence over Greenland’s territorial integrity after President Donald Trump reiterated his calls to annex it with the US.

Meanwhile speaking at an event hosted by Renew Europe at the European Parliament, NATO-Secretary General Mark Rutte said that on Greenland there was no crisis and avoided providing details about the matter. He praised President Trump for pressuring NATO members to achieve 5% defence expenditure targets and said that issues between NATO members are resolved behind closed doors.
