We have been rather cautious on reporting about the antics being peddled by the Prime Minister over Fort Tigne which is currently under MIDI’s ownership. MIDI have a serious financial crisis at hand and need to sell their assets to cover their debts. Fort Tigne is one one of them.
The Prime Minister has started a PR campaign to save the fort after Joseph Portelli allegedly declared his interest to buy it. Joseph Portelli’s offer is being matched by Din L-Art Ħelwa.
What is strange however is that MIDI already solicited Joseph Portelli among several other construction moguls in their attempt to exit from their investment in Manoel Island so it’s a bit strange that all of a sudden now Joseph Portelli’s name is being dragged in the news as a potential buyer for Fort Tigne.
The Prime Minister is currently trying to compensate for his political losses brought by his proposed and most corrupt planning reform in history, by announcing public parks and re-acquiring national heritage. As part of this new campaign by the government, the Prime Minister has announced a public park in Manoel Island, another public park in White Rocks and announced the re-possession of Fort Salvatore in Kalkara. Fort Tigne is just another addition to this campaign.
Many now suspect that the Prime Minister is playing games with Fort Tigne with Joseph Portelli, who is also a close ally of Joseph Muscat.
The Labour government’s turn in policy to announce public parks has been brought by thanks to constant pressure by the environmental lobby over Manoel Island and the proposed planning reform. It shows that the government is trying to address that criticism made against it over the environment and planning laws. Change has been prompted by political action by civil society and these developments only confirm the value and importance of pressuring this government to do the right thing.
