Murder-suspect Stephen Caruana gets suspended sentence for killing wife’s lover: Jury cites self-defence

Murder-suspected Stephen Caruana has received a suspended prison-sentence for his murder of Neville Baldacchino after a trial by jury considered his case as a homicide in excess of self-defence due to fright. The jury concluded their decision with 8 votes against one. Stephen Caruana received a suspended jail-sentence of two years suspended by four years and a €3,000 fine.

The jury concluded their decision after considering the fact that Neville Baldacchino was shot and killed at the domicile of Stephen Caruana and his wife Romina Caruana in Qormi. Stephen Caruana said during his testimony that he was frightened with the presence of another man in his house. Neville Baldacchino is pictured above.

Romina Caruana happens to be Joe Gaffarena’s daughter and Joe Gaffarena formed business partnerships with the prosecuting Police officer Daniel Żammit when Stephen Caruana was first charged back in 2008. Daniel Żammit was the son of previous Police Commissioner Ray Żammit; both of whom have resigned since then.
