The foreign policy of Prime Minister Robert Abela is being formed via typical behaviour of a criminal organisation: disregarding any rules, principles and customs. The Prime Minister has recently directed the Labour Party to gather data through a survey on the the preferences of the Maltese towards their foreign policy and international alignments. The Prime Minister tried to gauge whether the Maltese are more in favour of the US or the EU in order to calibrate his position accordingly.
The Prime Minister refused to publicly take a position on Greenland Denmark citing good relations with the US government but privately supported the EU Council’s position: this prompted condemnations from the Opposition. Some people (and academics) still don’t get it despite peddling themselves as expert opinionists on the colonial relic of the free press. This is why they are wasting time and ink on the totally irrelevant Board of Peace. You all look like a bunch of desperate dogs fighting over a bone.
As the EU High Representative stated yesterday at the conclusion of the Foreign Council meeting, the situation in Gaza depends on Hamas and Israel: Hamas refuses to disarm while Israel refuses to allow aid and supplies in and open the Rafah crossing. Hamas meanwhile is consolidating its power in Gaza and purging dissidents instead of handing over administration. The Board of Peace is irrelevant unless Hamas disarms and allows the Palestinian Authority to take over Gaza and this doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is playing around the games of President Trump and is everyone is tasking the bait.
This is like discussing bureaucratic procedures during an ongoing natural disaster.
The Prime Minister is using foreign policy to play games and theatre and nothing meaningful is being done. This is a time when Europe is uniting and European states are collaborating on strategic interests such as security, energy and defence. The Prime Minister is doing the opposite by isolating us further while empowering China’s influence on Malta.
His foreign policy is not aligned with Europe or European values: it is aligned with himself and his close friends and supporters who are profiting from this foreign policy both directly via material profits and also via a consolidation of authoritarian power over the rule-of-law. This is very Orbenasque and the Labour Party is on trend in aligning itself with the European far-right both in principle and in character.
