Political party Momentum has released a statement demanding the government to strip Peter Mandelson of his Ġieħ Ir-Repubblika Honour. The political party described the previous British Ambassador to the US as Tony Blair’s guru who received the honour by Joseph Muscat in 2016 when the Maltese premier was currying favour with European leaders. Momentum’s statement can be read here.
Peter Mandelson has been one of the names revealed in the Jeffrey Epstein files and correspondence shows that Mandelson preserved his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein even after he was convicted of child-trafficking. The Labour Party veteran and former EU Commissioner was forced to resign as the UK’s ambassador to the US in 2025 after his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced in the files.
In the UK this week, Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly condemned Mandelson for sharing confidential and market-sensitive government material with Epstein, saying a dossier had been sent to police and that formal steps were being initiated to remove Mandelson from public life. Mandelson has resigned from the House of Lords, while reports say the government is exploring the exceptional step of legislation to strip him of his peerage/title, a move that is rare and procedurally complex.
