Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held a press conference earlier today to rebut the US President’s threats after Spain demanded US military assets to leave its territories following the war against Iran. President Donald Trump threatened Spain with a trade embargo but Chancellor Friedrich Merz defended his Spanish counterparts and said that any trade deals had to go through the EU with Spain treated as just any other EU-member.
In his speech, the Spanish Prime Minister said that the war on Iran was completely inevitable and that Spain’s position on the matter is just the same as its position on Ukraine and Gaza. Spain upholds international law he said and also reiterated that Spain is not alone in its position.
Prime Minister Sanchez brought up the example of the Iraq War to claim that the effects of this war may be significantly negative for the region. He strongly condemned the US and Israel for their indiscriminate attacks which also struck civilians. He added that Europe is facing negative effects from this avoidable war such as gas and oil price increases, and new security threats as n EU-member state was attacked (Cyprus).
The Spanish Prime Minister’s opponents at home and in Brussels, mainly the Partido Popular are accusing the Spanish Premier of compromising Spain’s good relations with the US with his recklessness but have so far remained silent on the latest threats by US President Donald Trump de yesterday at the White House.
The Spanish prime minister is navigating a difficult domestic political landscape after narrowly winning the general elections and governing through a coalition that includes political extremists and Catalan separatists, but is also battling for his position in foreign EU politics.
