Malta’s industrial output rebounds in January

Malta’s industrial output registered a rebound in January, according to new figures released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), following a period of contraction in late 2025.

According to the Index of Industrial Production, the output of manufacturing industries in Malta and quarrying went up by 2.5% in January following a dip in December. The increase was 5.7% compared to the same month of last year and 5.2% when excluding energy.

Industrial output fell during last year, with the NSO reporting a year-on-year drop of 8.2% in November 2025 driven largely by weaker manufacturing activity, particularly in sectors such as electronics and food production. The export-led manufacturing industry in Malta suffered difficult challenges mainly due to new tariffs by US President Donald Trump and the relocation of several factories.
