Yesterday evening, Sweden has seized another Russian shadow fleet vessel called the Sea Owl I (IMO: 9321172). The vessel was used to sell Russian oil and was captured outside Trelleborg.
This is the second seizure of a Russian Shadow Fleet by Sweden since the last week when Sweden seized the Caffa which transported stolen grain from Ukraine.
Europe is set to retain the pressure on Russia and its oil industry despite the latest sanctions relief to Russia by the US.
The Sea Owl I was sailing with a fake Cameroonian flag. The ship was boarded yesterday evening by the Swedish Police and the Coast Guyard. Deputy Head of Operations of the Swedish Coast Guard said that “Our overall assessment is that the risk of safety deficiencies on board is high. On this basis, the vessel cannot be considered to fall under what the Law of the Sea defines as innocent passage. The threats to maritime safety and the environment are too great. Therefore, there is sufficient ground for action against the vessel.”.
