US government officials have informed EU leaders that the US is unsanctioning Russian oil currently at sea for up to 30 days. Unconfirmed reports state that the move is targeted towards India which will be making significant Russian oil purchases.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously said that the US would unsaction some Russian oil to increase oil supply and help tamp down prices. EU Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen said that this is the wrong direction to take and that Europe will not be lifting sanctions on Russian oil.
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz both stood with Europe’s position and both of them said that Europe can not abandon Ukraine.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that the US has made it very clear that it is trying to divide Europe. In an interview with the Financial Times she urged EU countries to stay united and avoid bilateral deals with Washington.
Unsactioning Russian oil will support the Russian economy which is now dithering due to sanctions during a time when Russia is taking significant losses in the front-line.
Oil prices are spiraling upwards as the Battle of Hormuz is ongoing.
