Food inflation persisting in Malta: HICP for February static

According to the latest statistics by NSO, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices remained flat for February at 2.3%, however this was only because several items such as information technology came down in prices while the regular inflationary pressures on food, beverages and restaurants are still increasing.

Inflation slowed down in Europe and Malta at the start of the year, but inflation has now made a comeback with the war in Iran and inflationary pressures for March are expected much higher.

Food inflation is also prompting a debate by restaurateurs over VAT rates for catering establishments.
