On Thursday March 19th, Opposition Leader Alex Borg attended the Enlarged EPP Summit in Brussels where the EPP’s top-brass gathered for discussions about the political group’s future and its vision for Europe. Subsequently, the Nationalist Party issued a statement with the Opposition Leader’s comments during the summit, where he echoed the appeals made by Malta’s Foreign Minister to European partners to help Malta secure its shores from the Russian shadow fleet.
The Russian Shadow Fleet makes regular use of Hurd’s Bank apart from travelling outside our shores.
The EPP also issued a statement following the summit. The EPP reiterated its support for Ukraine, and Alex Borg’s support on this European existential issue has so far been lacking. Ukraine is also deeply tied with the core theme of the EPP’s summit: Europe’s independence in all strategic matters including security and energy. In its statement, the EPP has reiterated that Europe needs to continue striving for its independence whilst doing everything necessary to become a global actor to shape the international order.
The political mindset of the EPP in today’s global order is inspired by a surge of European unity and patriotism as opposed to the growing local nationalist and isolationist politics of the far-right. Alex Borg still needs to pronounce himself extensively on his political thoughts about Europe and where does Malta stand in this process.
Tied with this European awakening, there is also local situation which should be the base of our concern and our work to engage and participate in this new European political era. The Labour government is turning its back on important strategic issues with regard to Malta’s strategic interests especially defence and energy. The Labour government has no plans to strengthen these pillars to the extent of significantly reducing our foreign dependencies. The risk is a prolonged state of stagnation.
Alex Borg still needs to put forward an inspiring vision for Malta which is aligned with the ongoing European re-awakening. He is supposed to do even better than the incumbent Foreign Minister if he is expected to be considered as an alternative governor. We are still waiting with great expectations.
