US Vice-President JD Vance has travelled to Hungary to give a public endorsement to incumbent Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of a crucial election next Sunday. The US Vice-President praised Orban’s policies and even lauded Hungary for its energy policies which, according to him, is keeping electricity prices low.
Viktor Orban’s government used to import Russian oil until Ukraine cut the supply from the Druzhba pipeline. The US government also has a policy of actively supporting far-right political parties in Europe.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg has published details from a Hungarian government transcript of an October 2025 phone call in which Viktor Orban openly ingratiated himself with Vladimir Putin, declaring “I am at your service” and offering to help “in any way.” Orban likened himself to a mouse ready to assist the Russian “lion,” a reference to a popular fable that reportedly made Putin laugh. The publication follows another publication by VSquare of Hungary’s Foreign Minister coordinating EU lobbying to remove Russian citizens from the EU sanctions-list.
Viktor Orban is going down in the polls against his opponent Peter Magyar and fears loom within his party, Fidesz, that he may very well lose the election. Viktor Orban is one the longest serving Prime Ministers in Europe in history having been in his position since 2010.
