Today’s survey results are very worrying for the Opposition and should raise the alarm to prompt the Party into an immediate and sweeping internal reform and potentially also a change of leadership. Alex Borg will ultimately lose the next election at this pace and this is not in the interest of the country which desperately needs a change of government.
The problem with Alex Borg is very clear and it also well known to all PN insiders. Alex Borg has chosen the wrong person for the Party’s CEO who is utterly and totally clueless and is ultimately representing interests of real-estate speculators. Sabine Agius Cabourdin who has little to no real-life experience in anything major and actually productive, seems to have delusional ideas about becoming the next Keith Schembri and Queen-maker. It is also thanks to her that internal party activity within the party’s structures is going down significantly resulting in total disorgansiation in the preparations for the election campaign.
Things at the PN are really not well and the longer someone will admit this, the longer the problem will drag on.
We have been consistent in our criticism that Alex Borg that he is inexperienced and has no grit to become the Prime Minister. Unfortunately, he is also blocking himself from growth and development, and is refusing to take any risks. Alex Borg seems to genuinely and literally believe that people will vote for him just because Labour is bad and he is good-looking. This is not a literary hyperbole, but actual and literal truth.
Alex Borg started out really well by proposing something radical: the Constitutional amendments to protect the environment. However, he then stopped short and stayed low. This is not how to do politics. Joseph Muscat won the elections and turned the tide against PN, by disrupting politics on a weekly basis, galvanising the party, forming alliances, and taking radical stances on a regular basis. He didn’t seethe and lay low. The most common reason to explain why Donald Trump wins the elections, according to Slavoj Zizek and most of the intellectual observers studying him, is that he speaks about issues radically without political censorship and pretenses, and therefore projects radical change. Alex Borg is doing the opposite in the sense that he just wants to be a better version of the status quo and not to change the status quo entirely – this is not exciting for many people.
There is a third of the electorate that has not been galvanised by the PN and instead third-parties are gaining ground. Alex Borg should make a coalition with the Third-Parties and ensure an absolute victory in the upcoming elections. The PN Leader expects third-parties, dissidents and the free press to do the heavy-lifting for the Opposition while he walks nonchalantly expecting power to be handed to him on a silver-platter. If he loses the election he will also lose the trust of those who have been in the fight against Labour much way before him.
Alex Borg needs to get really serious about winning the general election and should forget altogether about the prospect of remaining Leader of PN if he loses the election, as this is only adding to his complacency. If he is not panicking, it may be unlikely that he will be compelled to take action or change, so someone should explain to him the gravity of the situation.
