In a session held in Strasbourg today, the European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved the EU-US trade deal which was negotiated in Scotland, in the month of July last year.
440 voted in favour and only 151 voted against. 50 abstained.
Previous EEP Group Leader Manfred Weber said that the deal was “damage control” after US President Trump imposed a 15% tariff on all EU products entering the US. Under the agreement, the EU is set to remove import duties on many US industrial goods and provide preferential access to some US agricultural products.
The trade deal that was initially approved by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen leaves much to be desired as it is strongly biased in favour of US interests. The EU Commissioner approved of the trade deal single-handedly without consulting other European Council members. Sabine Weyand, the European Commission’s Director-General for Trade (DG TRADE) from 2019 until mid-2026 had resigned over the deal.
EU officials and political leaders have sugar-coated the end result as a deal that provides stability and assurances but virtually no one in European institutions is celebrating the contents of the deal.
