Banquo is back

My favourite commenter of this website is back after a seemingly long break from posting. I’m reproducing one of his latest comments here.

I fully agree with him here. The Nationalist Party has completely abandoned its role as an opposition party and it will probably fall into further irrelevance in the next five years, because presenting proposals that imitate the Labour Party will never give it traction.

If you try to imitate Labour, voters may as well vote for the real thing: Labour itself.

The comment below was in response to this story.

Start of comment:

The most shocking part of this story is not that the Labour Party nominated Carmelo Abela (one would expect nothing better) but that the Nationalist Party went along with it. No principled stand, no symbolic protest. Nothing. They voted for him.

We really are on our own. The Opposition is castrated, incompetent or only sees a future in sleaze that equals the governmentโ€™s.

The government will now โ€˜co-optโ€™ the opposition in their project, as they have already demonstrated they can. There will be play acting at โ€˜competing ideasโ€™ (even though there were none during our โ€œvery positiveโ€ election campaign) but the past months have shown that โ€œitโ€™s one big club, and you ainโ€™t in itโ€ (credit to George Carlin). I guess being in Opposition is not going to be that bad.

End of comment.ย
