The Labour government is jailing drug mules: not drug importers

The Labour government is pretending to be tough on drugs and to be waging a successful war against drug trafficking in Malta.

In reality, the police are only succeeding to the extent that this war reaches the lower levels of the supply chain. The mules, street dealers and small operators are being targeted, while the larger importers and financiers remain largely untouched.

The Labour government has granted an amnesty to one of Maltaโ€™s most prolific cocaine dealers. At the same time, its relaxed approach to anti-money-laundering enforcement has allowed major drug importers to remain unscathed. Drug importers are rarely caught with the product itself because more often, they are exposed through financial crime investigations.

By weakening Maltaโ€™s AML framework, the Labour government has accommodated large and sophisticated criminal operators at the expense of ordinary citizens, who continue to bear the brunt of the FIAUโ€™s heavy-handed enforcement.

In order for the government to pretend that it is taking action against financial crime, the FIAU has turned its guns on ordinary citizens, while the real drug importers remain untouched.

It should also be noted that Lilu l-King, who represents a threat to national security, has not been deported despite his history of drug dealing. His associate, Jordan Azzopardi, is still facing charges in court.

So much about tough on crime.

Total joke.
