Yesterday at the NATO Summit, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that he wants to retain good relations with the US despite intentionally pushing his country closer to China economically and even politically.
His statement at the NATO Summit was made as Spanish politicians in Spain celebrated up to 700 Chinese car imports which they claim should precede the opening of a Chinese-EV car manufacturing, SAIC in the lithium-rich mineral region of Galicia.
Regional Spanish politicians from the Galician region of the conservative Partido Popular, have celebrated the Chinese car imports claiming, from official state-produced propaganda that it is a big event. Citizens in Galicia mocked the PP after it criticised Sanchez for turning to China, yet are now celebrating the Chinese connection. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez personally pushed for China to open a car-manufacturing in Spain around two years ago.
The spat between US President Donald Trump and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez comes amid the Spanish Prime Minister’s commingling with the Chinese Communist Party and his attacks on US companies. The Spanish government has just recently banned Palantir from operating in Spain while fully embracing Huawei. The spat between President Trump and the Spanish Premier escalated after Spain refused the use of US bases in Spain for the war in Iran.
US President Donald Trump wanted to cut off any trade relations with Spain while Sanchez insists he wants to retain good relations with the US. Sanchez said he had an informal chat with President Trump at the NATO summit about the World Cup. President Trump said that Premeir Sanchez made a pledge to increase defence investment.
