North Korea is once again backstopping Russia’s losses in its war in Ukraine by providing troops and ammunition to its struggling army as it grapples with fuel shortages.
Footage uploaded to Russian social media shows a recent contingent of North Korean troops at a Russian military site, although the location of the footage has not been confirmed. North Korean troops have been pouring into Russia since 2024 and took part in the recapture of Kursk from Ukrainian forces. North Korean troops have also been found fighting in various parts of the Ukrainian front line.
A North Korean contingent of troops, along with a technical missile unit, is currently stationed in Russia’s Voronezh region. Russia has is currently using North Korean ballistic missiles in its attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilians and used North Korean missiles in one of its latest deadly attack on Kyiv, which killed up to 17 people.
North Korea has stepped up its support for Russia at very critical moments in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: first in Kursk in 2024, and now as Russia experiences widespread fuel shortages and challenges along several parts of the front line.
