There has been interesting testimony in Court today as Yorgen Fenech surprisingly testifies, contrary to our previous report.
Basically, during his testimony, Yorgen Fenech stuck to the story he recounted to the Police when he was interrogated: that he was framed by Keith Schembri and Melvin Theuma over the murder and that he never wanted to take part in it (despite admitting to paying Melvin Theuma €50,000 for the murder).
Yorgen Fenech also recounted how he knew Keith Schembri since they were children, as they lived opposite each other in Santa Lucia.
He also tried to challenge Melvin Theuma’s version of events by contradicting him on the month when Melvin Theuma said he was told by Yorgen to commission the murder, with Yorgen presenting a credit card as evidence showing that he was in the USA at that time.
During the testimony, Yorgen Fenech broke down and cried and said, “I made a mistake” twice.
I am a regular abuser of human error, but none of my errors would ever lead me to premeditate and commit a murder.
Yorgen Fenech has many good reasons why he is breaking down: not only to seek sympathy from the jury but also to genuinely vent out. The toll of the murder of a journalist is quite hard to bear, and Yorgen Fenech does tell the truth in a way when he admits that he got involved in something beyond him. The only problem is that with these kinds of people, remorse is usually a by-product of being caught and imprisoned and not willfully chosen under freedom.
As for Keith Schembri, we already knew that the Police never investigated him for the murder, as he was never treated as a suspect: this, though, has been a looming question and issue long before Yorgen Fenech gave testimony and blamed it all on Keith Schembri.
The Police have nothing holding them back from renewing their investigation, opening new investigations and prosecuting Keith Schembri for being involved in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
