Yesterday’s cross-examination of Yorgen Fenech by the Prosecutor in Court was startling, highly revealing, and important on a number of points arising from Fenech’s testimony about his relationships with government officials and Planning Authority Executive Chairman Johann Buttigieg.
The Prosecutor repeatedly hammered home the point that Yorgen Fenech sought favours from government officials.
Johann Buttigieg was on a gift-list by Yorgen Fenech. Yorgen Fenech actively discussed insider-dealing activities with Johann Buttigieg while Buttigieg was Executive Chairman of the Planning Authority, including by asking about Joseph Portelli’s properties and entering into business with Johann Buttigieg. Johann Buttigieg was re-appointed as Executive Chairman to the Planning Authority by the incumbent Prime Minister.
As the Prosecutor highlighted the chats, they showed Johann Buttigieg’s reciprocity towards Yorgen Fenech, with the two of them even planning to enter into business together. This is blatant corruption by Johann Buttigieg, yet he will go to work on Monday morning as if nothing has happened.
What is striking is that the Prosecutor is aware of corrupt dealings between Yorgen Fenech and government officials and, as his questioning shows, is capable of probing and subsequently prosecuting these alleged crimes. This stands in stark contrast to the Attorney General’s refusal to prosecute Rosianne Cutajar over her fraudulent ITS contract and the gifts she received from Yorgen Fenech.
Yorgen Fenech is right about one thing: that he is being solely and exclusively blamed and condemned for his crimes, while all the others who were involved in corruption with him, along with his sidekick Keith Schembri, are getting away with it.
