The United States of America is proposing to extend the existing UN arms embargo on Darfur to all of Sudan and includes drones in its submission of the embargo proposal. The US said that it does not want to make an equivalence between the parties of “the conflict”, and condemned both sides over civilian casualties.
US Senior Adviser to the President for Africa, Arab, and Middle Eastern Affairs, Massad Boulos, physically presented the proposal at the United Nations Security Council in New York on Monday.
The proposal comes as the Sudanese Armed Forces makes significant victories in North Kordofan as the RSF continue to lose territory.
The US has consistently taken positions that are more beneficial to the RSF owing to diplomatic pressure by the UAE which is the main sponsor and backer of the RSF. The political coalition Somoud, which backs the RSF, has also consistently called for a truce when the RSF is faced with military defeats.
A weapons arms embargo would mainly affect weapons-provisions to the SAF which has recently made a purchase of military hardware from Pakistan with the backing of Saudi Arabia.
A weapons arms embargo would not stop the illicit weapons flow to the RSF but would more likely affect the SAF in procuring weaponry from legitimate markets and arms suppliers. An immediate ceasefire would also entrap the Sudanese communities currently under RSF rule providing them with no guarantee that the ethnic cleansing in the Darfur region by the RSF would come to an end.
Russia and China oppose the US proposal and their veto-power means that the resolution will probably not be approved.
