Yesterday, 2 September 2026, Yorgen Fenech walked free from Court following a bizarre and highly questionable verdict by the jury over accusations that he conspired to murder Daphne Caruana Galizia. The jury gave this verdict despite the fact that Yorgen Fenech admitted in Court during his testimony that he paid Melvin Theuma at least €30,000 to cover his expenses for paying for Daphne’s murder.
Yorgen Fenech also asked police interrogators for a Presidential Pardon in exchange for information on Daphne’s murder.
These two facts alone are already major admissions of his guilt. Yet, somehow, the jury found it fit to liberate a man who actually and factually admitted to paying for murder.
Yorgen Fenech got away with murder.
There is no other way to put it.
And as Yorgen Fenech walks free, the nation is seriously broken after Daphne and her family were deprived of their opportunity for justice. Someone needs to take responsibility for this historic and catastrophic failure, and undoubtedly it should be the Attorney General who first submits her resignation.
We are currently living in a dark state of affairs where the Maltese Mafia got away with commissioning the murder of a journalist. The State has failed Daphne and her family, and the whole nation. The press has also been failed because the State has given the message that the Mafia can get away with literally murdering one of us.
The historic and consequential negative ramifications of the verdict will quickly unfold across our society, and the divisions in society will become more apparent and tense.
