Following a call to convene parliament with urgency, Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg organised a press conference and elucidated his party’s position on the verdict in Yorgen Fenech’s case.
He said that the Nationalist Party trusts the Judiciary but does not trust the government, especially those politicians who fostered a culture of impunity in which ordinary citizens are not protected, and which led to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
He said that our thoughts are with Daphne’s family and that it is unimaginable what they may be feeling right now, as Daphne remains without justice.
The Prime Minister told us to “let the institutions work”, but the institutions did not deliver justice over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The State must ensure that justice is served.
It is very difficult for the Labour government to guarantee the public that justice will be served, he added.
Alex Borg also cited the public inquiry into Daphne’s murder and recalled that the State enabled the culture of impunity that killed her. He reiterated his call for the implementation of the reforms it recommended.
He also remarked on how Daphne was subjected to a campaign of demonisation.
The Opposition Leader said that Daphne was assassinated and that we have heard evidence of meetings and interventions in Daphne’s case from the Auberge de Castille. The most shocking thing, he said, is that for the first time in the history of our country, Castille had access to the investigation into the murder. He also blamed the Prime Minister for fostering this culture of impunity while serving as a consultant to disgraced former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. He also accused the Prime Minister of calling a general election because of the trial.
Alex Borg also concluded that he wants a country where journalists are free to investigate and do their work.
