Yesterday, civil-society lawyer Jason Azzopardi gave a detailed explanation on NGO Repubblika’s request to the police to conduct a criminal investigation on the fraudulent contract awarded to the wife of the Minister of Tourism, Amanda Muscat. The request to the police was filed last week with the Prime Minister calling it vexatious.
Jason Azzopardi gave his explanation during a discussion with Repubblika conducted by Christoph Schwaiger. The other participants were Repubblika activists Manuel Delia and Vicki Ann Cremona. You can watch the full discussion below.
Here are some of the main points said in the discussion:
- The contract was illegal and there was also the intent to conduct money-laundering. When providing the contract, government officials were aware that they were giving a contract for work that was not to be fulfilled, essentially making the contract fraudulent. This also carries with it the intention to launder money that was sourced from illegal proceeds.
- Vicki Ann Cremona pointed out that Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar and Education Minister Justyne Caruana were dismissed for doing the same exact thing. This means that Robert Abela is protecting Ministers Clayton Bartolo and Clint Camilleri. Jason Azzopardi stated that Clayton Bartolo and Clint Camilleri are among the ministers closest to the Prime Minister.
- The Prime Minister is also guilty because he abetted and facilitated the fraud. They are all in it together so they are compelled to cover for each other.
- Manuel Delia, a previous government official himself, argued that although Amanda Muscat would have probably fit the job-description of a secretary, should could never have qualified for a consultancy contract.
-
All participants agreed that this was just one example of the reckless and abusive manner in which governance is conducted, with appointments and decisions made not to serve the public interest but to sustain the Labour Party and its hold on power.
