Earlier this year, this website exposed the identity of the Freemason Grand Master of Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta, Simon Cusens. We also published a document that revealed that Mario Camilleri was a Freemason – we published the document because he denied being a Freemason. The document included the Identity Card number of Simon Cusens, proving as well the association of Mario Camilleri with Simon Cusens.
Simon Cusens retaliated by submitting a vexatious report about the publication of this document to the Data Protection Commissioner. The Data Protection Commissioner has been used in a vexatious way against my work multiple times against me and my work including by Rosianne Cutajar and Yorgen Fenech. So far, my experience with the Data Commissioner is that he is taking severe and heavy-handed decisions guided by political bias and motivation. I also had a case with the Data Protection Commissioner which I lost, adding to y suspicions at the institution’s biases. Now, the Data Protection Commissioner is investigating the case of the publication of this document.
I don’t trust the Data Protection Commissioner and therefore I have decided to defend myself legally in a different manner. Simon Cusens is a recipient of at least €5 million in funds which came via insider trading with privileged information and the public funding to the fraudulent contract with Vitals. Basically, Simon Cusens sold his company for around €5 million to his employee Ivan Vassallo. Ivan Vassallo didn’t have the money to buy the company, and Simon Cusens admitted that he didn’t even know where the money came from. The money came from potentially fully from public funds as Ivan Vassallo purchased the company with a loan guarantee by the Vitals shareholders themselves, who then went on to make the company one of their main suppliers and eventually ended up buying it. The company in question is Technoline. Ivan Vassallo was arraigned in Court along with Pierre Sladden who was involved in this fraud, but somehow Simon Cusens avoided prosecution.
It is bizarre to say the least that Simon Cusens avoided prosecution given that the received at least €5 million from this massive fraud which potentially came from public funds. Even if the money didn’t came from public funds, Simon Cusens benefitted from privileged information, insider trading and actually committed money laundering. Considering that anyone even remotely involved in thsi fraud has been arraigned and their assets frozen, that Simon Cusens was untouched remains a big mystery and a gross miscarriage of justice.
Moreover, the suspected criminal, not only has he avoided prosecution, but is now taking the deliberate freedom in using state institutions to bully me as a journalist for publishing and doing my job. This is unacceptable and both for me personally, and for the sake of justice in the country.
Therefore, I have decided to compile a detailed police report against Simon Cusens through a lawyer and had the lawyer submit the report to the Police requesting an investigation and an arraignment of Simon Cusens for his potential crimes. I am also requesting that all his assets are frozen so that he receives the same treatment as the others who have been arraigned in the case.
At The Maltese Herald, we remain open-minded and welcome constructive criticism. However, we have a zero-tolerance policy for criminals who exploit the law to hinder our work or inflict financial harm.
You can read the police report here and my affidavit here.
The police report was filed by lawyer Emma Portelli Bonnici.
