Mata dropped five positions in the Corruption Perceptions Index, reaching an all-time low. The results which can be found here are based on the opinions of the business community and not the general public.
What I see of current significance to this story, apart from the decline in the rank, is that Chamber of Commerce doesn’t seem to be reflecting the true and general opinions of the business community with its ingratiating press-releases describing criminal reforms as “well-meaning”. If the business people are unable to personally voice their concerns about government corruption, it should be up to their institutional representatives to take the task.
On the other hand, local businesses may prefer to keep silent about their concerns on government corruption fearing repercussions: a situation which is exacerbated with indiscriminate and politically-motivated government spending in the economy.
