Yesterday in Brussels, Pete Hegseth attended the NATO Ministerial Meeting where he continued delineating President Trump’s new US policy for Ukraine, NATO and European defense. On his first day, the US Defense Secretary began his meetings in Brussels by announcing that Ukraine should give up the territories it lost to Russia.
Following the meeting of yesterday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a very poorly-written speech concluding it by saying that the “President Trump will not allow anyone to turn Uncle Sam into Uncle Sucker”. When questioned by reporters, the US Defense Secretary declined to confirm whether the US would confirm Ukraine’s approval of a peace-deal about Ukraine it would potentially agree on with Russia. The US Defense Secretary also claimed that pulling out US troops from the Europe may be one of the concessions the US gives to Russia for a peace deal imposed on Ukraine.
While the US Defense Secretary was in Brussels, Russia stepped up its ethnic cleansing campaign in the occupied territories of Ukraine. In the occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, Russian security personnel began checking residents for Russian citizenship, leading to repression for those found without it. Residents without Russian passports are denied public welfare, medical and health services, and pensions. Since April 2023, Ukrainians not accepting Russian citizenship have been considered foreigners, resulting in deportations or conscription with the Russian Army.
Back in the United States, President Trump stated that he is confident that Vladimir Putin wants peace, and also said that if Putin didn’t want peace “he would have told him”. President Trump also wants to hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Xinping and Vladimir Putin to discuss a reduction in defense expenditure. He also added that he wants Russia back in the G7 and that expelling Russia from the G7 was a mistake.
President Donald Trump is in discussions with the Kremlin over Ukraine’s future and intends to force it to capitulate to Russia while also extracting extensive payments in rare earth minerals. President Trump’s plan breaks Europe’s peace regime which guaranteed the existence, security, and independence of small European nations: a system that became predominant after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
