The Libyan authorities continue their operations against human smugglers in the Libyan desert

The Libyan authorities have continued with their extensive operation against human smugglers in the desert, stating they have freed up to 82 Ethiopian and Eritrean migrants from captivity in the town of Zalla. The migrants were held for ransoms of up to $10,000, which were demanded from their families. Several suspects were also arrested.

The kidnapping and abduction of illegal migrants in the Libyan desert is a widespread practice with particularly Black migrants facing cruelty and discrimination in the country. However, Libyan authorities have recently stepped up their efforts against the human trafficking industry arresting several suspects.

The Libyan Prosecutor in Tripoli is also collaborating with officials of the Libyan National Army to conduct a nation-wide campaign against human smugglers and slavery in the Libyan desert.
