The Head of the General Directorate of Security Operations of Benghazi, Major General Jamal Al-Amami, who is effectively also responsible for security and police operations in the east of Libya, announced earlier this week, that up to 7 soldiers of the Libyan National Army have been killed in gun-fights against smugglers in the south-east of the country.
The Libyan general stated that the Libyan National Army will continue its operations against smugglers until they are all arrested. However, he noted that capturing them is very challenging as they constantly move across the vast desert region.
Human trafficking, smuggling and slavery is widespread across the Kufra region in the south-east of Libya, but the Libyan National Army has recently been stepping up its efforts to combat smugglers. The LNA has recently uncovered mass graves with bodies of Black migrants showing signs of rape and torture.
Smugglers in the Libyan desert are still abducting Black immigrants and sending videos to their relatives, showing them torturing their captives while demanding ransom payments.
