Mass graves have been uncovered in the south-east of Libya in the Al-Kufra desert late last week. Various reports have now confirmed that bodies found in the mass graves, totaling more than 50 Black migrants, had gun-shot wounds. Some bodies also show signs of torture and rape.
The Al-Kufra desert is a high-risk region with human-slavers and smugglers regularly abducting Black immigrants trying to cross the Libyan desert. The city of Kufra has also become a major transit point for smugglers and human-slavers who abduct tens of thousands of Black immigrants every year.
Recent operations coordinated between the Libyan Prosecutor in Tripoli and the Libyan National Army of Khalifa Haftar have successfully released many abductees who were being held for ransom, and arrested several suspects. Several suspects were also detained in relation to the mass graves.
The Libyan National Army, which controls the south-eastern region of Libya, has been increasing its efforts and collaboration with Tripoli to locate and arrest human-slavers and smugglers, although smugglers are still widely operating in the region. Recent operations that uncovered the mass graves also involved the Wahat Security Directorate.
