Taiwan seizes Chinese ship for damaging undersea cable

Earlier today, Taiwan seized the Chinese freight-carrier Hong Tai 58 after it was suspected of having damaged the undersea water cable connecting Taiwan and the Penghu Islands. This is the second time this year that China has damaged a Taiwanese undersea cable. China and Russia have also damaged several European cables since late last year.

The latest sabotage attack against an underwater sea cable in Europe happened last week on February 20th against a fibre-optic cable linking Finland and German. The EU is currently working on a plan with โ‚ฌ1 billion package aimed to help the authorities of different EU-member states coordinate their detection and prevention of undersea cable sabotage. NATO is also helping in this initiative by coordinating with local authorities and EU authorities such as the EU Agency for Cybersecurity.
