Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced that Ukraine and the US are close to signing a deal over Ukraine’s mineral rights. The US’ demand has been lowered from $500 billion to $350 billion and President Trump said that if Ukraine signs the deal, “it would have the right to keep fighting”. Half of the US profits from the deal will be sent to a fund controlled by the US which will invest all its proceeds in Ukraine. In exchange, the US will also keep supplying Ukraine with weaponry.
The deal has been changed since it was initially rejected by President Zelensky at the Munich Conference and rejected again during a visit by US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg. The previous terms of the deal included infrastructure and harbours’ right which have now been removed. The deal does not contain any security or political guarantees and is purely transactional and economic.
The announcement about the tentative agreement also comes following a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House.
A recently published study is stating that the amount of military aid provided by the US to Ukraine is actually much lower than the official estimate when considering the value depreciation of old weaponry.
