President Trump grants Russia sanctions relief on food and fertiliser exports with safe passage through the Black Sea

Earlier today, the Kremlin announced that it was granted a very advantageous “ceasefire deal” by the United States which was approved by Ukraine during talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The US, Ukraine and Russia have agreed to a ceasefire deal in the Black Sea, set to take effect following new sanctions relief.

According to a statement by the Kremlin, the US has agreed to allow safe passage for Russian commercial vessels in the Black Sea, and will lift sanctions on Russian exports of food and fertiliser. The Kremlin’s statement also says that the agreement will come into force once the US removes sanctions on the state-owned Russian Agricultural Bank: Rosselkhozbank. Rosselkhozbank will also be reconnected to the SWIFT system.

Safe passage for Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea was previously provided by Turkey. Ukraine agreed to the “ceasefire proposal” without conditions in its bid to show its determination to reach a lasting peace. Ukraine’s Minister of Defense also stated that Ukraine reserves the right to self-defence if Russia breaks this agreement by allowing the passage of naval vessels into the western part of the Black Sea.
