US Secretary of State confirms episode when US withheld intelligence sharing from Ukraine

In a Congress hearing, testifying in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, US Secretary of state Marco Rubio confirmed an episode when the US withheld weapons and intelligence sharing from Ukraine. The withholding of intelligence sharing by the US from Ukraine coincided with a rapid and surprise Russian push in Kursk and Russia’s swift recapture of the city of Sudhza. Ukraine troops on the ground that were forced to retreat from Kursk said that their positions were precisely shelled before Russian troops moved towards their positions.

The US Secretary of State said that there was no military solution to the war in Ukraine despite the fact that Ukraine’s military resistance has enabled its state to survive from Russia’s war of imperial conquest.

On the other hand, the European Union issued a new round of sanctions on Russia mostly targeting its shadow fleet and companies and individuals bypassing existing sanctions. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that Russia is refusing to make peace with Ukraine and that pressure needs to be raised against it. She also appealed for the cooperation of the US to raise pressure on Russia.

President Donald Trump is taking the matter more lightly, engaging in long and friendly phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. President Trump is offering Putin lucrative trade deals if he simply agrees to end the war, which for President Trump also means that Russia can keep all the Ukrainian territory it has conquered.

Russia has escalated its airstrikes against Ukrainian civilians and cities during the ongoing US-brokered peace talks.
